I bought this tool locally with high hopes that it would hold up to pulling dandelions out of the lawn. It worked wonders for about 30 minutes with a smooth and easy manner. Very effective. Unfortunately, a firmer patch of soil won out and the blade bent right over as easily as the dandelions had come free.
I once had a similar tool that was indestructable, and have tried to replace it with this one and one from a different manufacturer. No luck with either in firm, not compacted soil. My guess is heat treating or tempering is the critical missing step in the manufacture of these tools.
This tool will work well in tended soils such as a garden or flower bed. Not for lawns, firm, well rooted or compacted soil.
I had misgivings about the strength of the blade, but thought I would give it a try anyway. I have a light sandy rock-free loam and thought I might be able to use it. I was wrong. I did get some use from it and really liked it. In fact the design is probably the best I have used. It goes into the soil easily and the width of the blade gives good leverage. But the metal is just too feeble. A respectable (but hardly gargantuan) dandelion in rain-moistened soil was its undoing. A little hardening of the metal would make it an excellent weeder, but it can't be counted on, even with ideal conditions and careful use.
